I.Warming
up.
Teacher: As you know we've gathered here to speak about different
aspects of the life in the USA.
I see three teams here ready for discussion and exchanging of opinions. To warm
you up I'd like to offer you some simple questions on history and geography of
the USA:
- What countries made early settlements in America?
- What was the first English colony in America?
- What were the " Pilgrim Fathers"?
- What were the thirteen colonies that were
established by the time of the war of independence?
- Who was the first
American president? When did he come to office?
- What does the Statue of
Liberty in New-York commemorate?
- When does the American
president take office and how long is his term?
- What is the name given to the official
residence of the president of the USA
in Washington?
- What is the national flag
of the USA
called?
- What river does the
capital of the USA
stand on?
- What is the largest river
of the USA?
- What was the name of the
ship which brought the first immigrants to America?
- What is the nickname of
the US
government?
- When is the Day of
Independence in the USA?
II.Контрольмонологическойречи .
Teacher: I guess that everyone has got his own view of America according to the English
lessons and the books you've read. Can you tell me what you think of America?
Pupil 1: As far as I know it is one of the
largest countries in the world. Its territory is about nine million square
kilometers and it lies in the North American continent and is washed by the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Pupil 2: Yes, I agree with you, the country
is rather big and that's why it has lots of different climatic regions. For
example it's rather warm in Florida
and the climate there is considered to be subtropical and they get apples and
fresh fruit all the year round.
Pupil 3: Well, speaking about Florida they say the
nickname of the state is Sunshine state. No wonder all the retired people who
have got enough money tend to live there to warm their bones.
Pupil 4: That's right, but speaking about the
climate of the USA
we can't say that it is so nice everywhere. Poor Americans, they even have
snow, especially in the state of Washington
in the North-West.
Pupil 5: By the way, do you know what state
is nicknamed the White state?
Pupil 6: Of course, I know, it's Alaska, I am very sorry
to say. This enormous territory used to belong to Russia one day. They say they've
found gold there.
Pupil 7: Yes, you are right; I read a lot of
stories by a famous American writer Jack London who described the life of the
gold-diggers in Alaska.
Pupil 8: I've heard somewhere that Jack
London himself went to look for gold.
Pupil 7: Yes, you are right. But he didn't
find any gold there except the personages for his books.
Pupil 9: My idea of America is cowboy’s ranches and
cactuses.
Pupil 10: Yes, there are many spacious places
in America.
As our teacher told us one day, she traveled through all America from east to west and especially in the
states of Texas and Arizona there are very few houses and people
but lots of uncultivated land and thorny cactuses.
Pupil 11: Well, my idea of America is high skyscrapers and big
cities. I know that New-York is especially rich in skyscrapers. Just imagine, Empire State building has got
102 floors.
Pupil 12: I agree with you, it's very
impressive. But do you know where in the world the highest skyscraper is.
Pupil 11: In New-York probably?
Pupil 12: Unfortunately not. They say, in
Chicago, the Sears Tower.
I've never seen it but I read about it somewhere.
Pupil 13: My ideal place in America is a quiet house near Massachusetts. As far as I know, the climate
there is very much like in Russia
and I prefer to live in a two-floored house where all the Americans live.
II.Контрольмонологическойречи.
Teacher: I see that your ideas of the USA
have much in common and sometimes they differ. Let's try to check whether you
know some facts about the cities of the USA. Will you recognize the place
of interest here in the picture and give some information about it. (
учащимся предлагаются слайды с видами различных городов США, команды отвечают
по очереди).
Pupil 1: If I am not mistaken, this is the
famous Empire State Building. It was built in... The most interesting fact is that...
Pupil 2: As far as I know
this is the White House
,the official residence of the American president. It was built by the order
of... It is painted white because...
Pupil 4: As I see, it is Central
park in New-York.
It is used by thousands of New-Yorkers and visitors every day. And in the
center of it there is a Zoo...
Pupil 5: l know, it is the Statue
of Liberty in New-York.
It was built in New-York Harbor
in 1886. It was a gift from the people of France. About 12 million immigrants
passed through New-York when they came to America.
Pupil 6: This is the
Guggenheim museum.
It has one of the world's finest collections of modern and contemporary art.
This museum was designed by the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.
Teacher: Thank you very much; your stories
were rather informative. Now we've got a surprise for you, a piece of drama.
III.Контроль аудирования в форме ролевой игры,
выполненной тремя учащимися в качестве домашнего задания.
Teacher: Look at these three gentlemen and
listen very attentively to what they are going to say. You should recognize
these historical personages. They were very well-known at their time and they
are still known and respected. Please, don't interrupt them and be with them up
to the end of their conversation. After that you can ask them questions to make
sure you are right.
Lincoln (L:)
Franklin(F:)
Washington (W:)
F: Hello, my dear friends. I think, I am the
oldest here, as I was born 295 years ago in a big family of my father who had
17 children.
W: Yes, I remember you, we met at the end of
your life.
F: Yes, these were interesting pioneering
times, the beginning of a new state. Life was not very easy then. As a child I
worked in the shop of my father, a soap and candle maker, but I didn't like the
job. I liked to read and study. I remember, when I was 12 I was sent to assist
my half-brother James who had a printing shop. I would often stay up late into
the night reading and improving my style of writing.
W: I agree, life was not so easy. But I was
luckier. I was born in 1732. And after the death of my father, at the age of
11, I went to a little country school, where I learned to read and to do sums
in arithmetic. I was a good student. Luckily, my eldest brother married Miss
Fairfax whose father was a rich land owner of the colony. He took a liking to me
and we became great friends. He helped me a lot in my future life.
L: Yes, gentlemen, I can't say I know you
personally. I was born a little later after you, my dear sir, became a
president. My father was a poor pioneer. We always had to move from one place
to another changing our homes. So I learned to cut the trees and to make
log-cabins at an early age. I went to school at long intervals from the age of
6 to 15 and the total amount of schooling which I received was less than a
year. And I was the first in a big family who learned to read and write.
F: People later considered me a great writer.
I remember my first writing experience. When my brother James began publishing
a newspaper I secretly wrote articles for the newspaper putting them under the
door of the print shop late at night, so my brother didn't know about it.
W: My first great task from Lord Fairfax was
to measure the land and to establish the boundary lines. I was 16 years old
then but I did my work so well that the governor of Virginia made me a public
surveyor for the colony.
L: I used to work in the Ohio and Mississippi
rivers to take corn and other products to New-Orleans by flat-boat. On one of
the trips at New-Orleans I saw Negro slaves bought and sold at public auction
in the market place. This sight made a great impression on me which I never
forgot.
F: Soon I started my own printing shop and
in1729 bought the newspaper "The Pennsylvania Gazette" where I wrote
my own articles. I was very active in my life. I organized the American Philosophical
Society, the first subscription library, the University of Pennsylvania.
W: As far as I know, you invented much in the
field of electricity: battery, armature, charge, condense, conductor, plus,
minus, positive, negative are all your new words. And you also did a pioneering
work of weather observations.
F: Yes, quite right. I lived a long life. I
witnessed the American revolution, I helped to make the Declaration of
Independence.
L: Yes, you are often called the "First
American", a journalist, scientist, educator, politician, writer and
philosopher. As for me, when quitting the work on the Mississippi I moved to
Illinois where I began to study law. And I was a success as an advocate. At the
age of 25 I was elected to the state legislature. And I also became the
president of the USA in 1860. I witnessed the Civil War between the North and
the South. I consider my great achievement the Emancipation Proclamation in
1862.
W: I also took part in the war of the
American colonies against England which imposed great taxes on every our step
in America. Thomas Jefferson and I organized a committee to boycott English
goods. When tea was brought to Boston it was sank into the sea because we
refused to pay high taxes on English goods. There in London they decided to
punish us and close the port of Boston for any trade. So all 13 states united
and began the war against English colonial policy. On the 4th of
July 1776 we adopted the Declaration of Independence. And in 12 years I was
chosen the first president of the nation.
III. Контрольаудирования.
Teacher: So you've listened to a very strange
conversation, which may not have happened in reality. Has anybody got questions
to our guests? Have you guessed who they are? When you are going to name a
person, give your reasons why you think so.
Pupil 1: Could you repeat where you were
born?
Pupil 2: Did you take part in the operation
"Boston Tea Party?'
Pupil 3: What do you consider your main
achievement in the field of policy?
Pupil 4: Did you see each other during your
lifetime?
Pupil 5: When did you start your political
carrier?
Pupil 6: How did you finish your life?
Варианты персонажей, которые предлагают учащиеся:
Р1: In my opinion, the man on my left is Franklin because he has got a
nickname "the First American" and also he has mentioned all his
numerous occupations
P2: As far as I understood the man in the hat is Abraham Lincoln as he
really lead a very poor life but in the very early age he was elected to the
government and devoted all his life to the liberation of the Negroes. The Emancipation Proclamation was the most important document for those times but for this Lincoln
was assassinated in the theatre in Washington.
P3: I think the man in the middle is George
Washington because he took part in the war against England and he also knew
Jefferson so he was at the very beginning of the American nation. He also
mentioned the "Boston Tea Party" which was the reason of the war with the English.
IV.Контроль навыков просмотрового чтения с
опорой на литературные тексты американских авторов.
1) Teacher: Now can I suggest
to you rewriting this piece of text in the American variant of the language?
This will show your knowledge of the American spelling.
The
text is the following:
One
day in autumn I was going up the lift to the 10th floor. Among the
passengers there was a very strange man. It seemed to me that I saw him in some
film, in the cinema. He was chewing some sweets and was dressed in very funny
trainers. I asked him, "Have you got a brother?" He said, "Yes,
he lives in Main street. He is an actor at the theatre. But I live here, my
flat is in the 7th floor. I asked him if he liked funny things. He
answered that he often stops at the shop on his way home and he has just bought
the trainers there. He was going to play football because it is his favourite
game. His son goes to school and he is in the 8th form and every
summer his family goes on holiday.
2) Teacher: Now
each team will receive the pieces of two cut texts. There are no headings of
the texts and no endings. Your task is to collect the pieces first and then we
shall discuss the content.
3) Teacher: Now
when the texts are collected and understood, I am going to give you some
assignments on the texts:
a)make
up a plan to the text in the Present Indefinite tense
b)give
the heading to the text
c)what
can you say about the personages of the text. Give their characteristics
